INFO:
Cervical cancer affects 500,000 women each year and about 55% of women die. Barriers to care include lack of screening equipment and fear of the speculum exam. The modern speculum, a key gynecological tool, was invented over 150 years ago and no significant change has been made. In this talk, Mercy Asiedu describes a novel device, the Callascope, for examining the cervix and inner female reproductive anatomy without the speculum. The Callascope can be used by a health provider or the patients themselves, thus opening up a whole new area for self-examination of the cervix.
